This post demonstrates main problem with this poll.
All of the people you listed here are duel commentators, people like me/disrepute/vor at Level Up TV are TDM commentators who don't cover duel unless we absolutely have to step in. Something you may have perhaps not taken into account with your response when you say we "lack" in most areas.
I know that you are TDM experts but I just don't enjoy you as casters as much as those guys I've mentioned above.
Maybe I used wrong word, because surely you don't lack knowledge on the TDM part, but in _my_ opinion (and I don't want to sound disrespectful or something) you guys are certainly not my taste of shout-casters - maybe it's the accent, voice, tone or the way of expressing yourself but as I said - I just can't enjoy you guys as much as others whether it is duel, tdm or ctf. I'm sure though that you have plenty of fans anyway.
To be fair it's harder casting TDM, so much is happening that you can't really give deep insight like 2gd does in a duel match.
But when I watch lvl tdm streaming, I do think it's pleasant listening to your casters. Though im paying less attention to what is said, compared to if it was a duelstream.
You don't need to be a pro duel player to cast duels.
Anymore than you need to be a doctor to do first aid.
It helps, but most people watching quake already know how it works, for those that don't the concept of indepth tactics will be lost on them anyway so as long a you can provide the basics along with some entertaining chat that is all you need.
It don't take long to learn a map from a casting point of view and the concept of killing the other guy while colelcting powerups isn't hard to explain.
I don't wnat to be told 20 seconds in advance what someone is going to do or should do.
That's upto the two players I am watching. Nobody wants to be told a horse is going to fall down at the final jump before it happens.
Ugh I tually agree on the not needing to be a pro duel player to cast duel.
I remember a while ago a lot of people were obsessed with only having players guest commentate that we've seen in big tournaments. Some people just really have a knack for it.
Anyways the problem with the poll for me is that I've never had just a single favorite commentator. I always really like certain combinations because their styles give off such great chemistry. If I had to vote for solo commentary my top 3 would include djWHEAT, Joe and Jehar(totally deserves more props) because they know how to carry a show by themselves without you thinking there's something missing.
And side-by-side we all know how well Joe&2GD work together. djWHEAT with 2GD? That totally would work! zsx with Jehar would be awesome. And I could totally picture mick05 with TosspoT and it'll bring a smile to my face.
There's many more people I like listening to like Ischju, disrepute and vors tdm stuff, calipt, nvc (even though you sound upset when someone makes a mistake ;D <3<3<3)
2GD and Joe are my stand out favourites - however, I think Disrepute and vor are really good for lvl up tdm: well spoken, concise, professional and both seem intelligent.
and a big thanks to everyone who donates their time to streaming / casting - even the weaker casters make watching Quake 10x more enjoyable than just a demo.
tbh, those "insight" casters in 1v1 are getting on my nerves lately. More often then not they try to predict what will happen next and fail ("No way Cooller will attack now because he only has 1 yellow", Cooller attacks at that very moment).
It is often too much pseudo insight bla bla imo. I have no problem with some exited on-screen casts. I actually liked the Slasher/nvc or stermy combo more then too much smart assing.
The TDM folks however are always awesome.
Basically I'd prefer streams without casting (at least for duel) where I can switch POV and adjust gfx settings, oh wait....
Before people get that wrong, I appreciate the hard and time consuming work those volunteers do, don't get me wrong (actually send some bucks to various streamers).
I enjoy most commentary and pretty much all those listed do a great job. There is a difference between leading a cast and supporting it and obviously adding colour is a different skill to play by play, but you could break these things down too much and be left with no choices in each category.
For me, (and this will sound bias) nvc is the best caster. I have heard him do duel, tdm, ctf and even CA and has always shown insight and professionalism. He has an innate ability to read the game but does not get bogged down in predicting every movement of the player or teams play. Sure he has areas he is weak on, such being way too critical at times and he can often sound a bit depressed, but all round I believe he is the most naturally talented of those listed for quake as a whole. I like his voice, his tempo and he can also sit in as lead caster or colour, plus he is well fit. I think he has the most potential out of the casters listed.
We all spotted 2gds ability from his first casts in q4. It was like wow this is amazing, he understands the came so clearly, its like nothing we have seen before. It is just a pity now he is not around to cast everything. I am pretty sure many of us felt the same when djwheat disappeared from Quake. I dont see Joe as a Quake caster but an all around any game guy, and he does an excellent job, but he does not represent Quake for me.
Anyway a new breed of casters always replaces the old and my support is with nvc to become the future face of Quake (because he has model looks).
nvc just needs to add a little excitement to his voice/cast, same with you.
With regards to new faces of casters, please do not let Slasher cast anymore, he's brings nothing to the table other than his social networking abilities. Let someone else cast and get some experience.
I think us brits find it hard to get excited, and in a 20 min TDM game you don't really know what are important moments till the end of the game. But I do agree with you, I just wouldn't want to fain excitement.
Yup to alot of the stuff Disrepute. I disagree with the part of Joe. When he was casting in Q4, him and 2gd were a classic pair. I think it is down to time on the job, when Joe had the time and was casting full on in Q4 he was soooooo very passionate, and made it f*cking awesome to spectate. Really enhanced the experience tbh...2gd is just funny, and sees things that not eveyone sees.
Slasher isn't that bad imo. He at least knows what he is talking about when he tries to give some insight. Fish doesn't usually try to give very deep insight (rightfully so), but at least has a good level of enthusiasm.
Imo, the problem with some casters such as greased, is they don't have much playing experience and still try to give so much insight into what players are thinking, or why what they did was a mistake, etc. You cant learn Quake just by watching it.
i agree on your last paragraph. id also add that this kind of casters is casting mainly for them to be popular and heard of and less for spectators experience and game or match itself. they are lady gaga of casting.
Stupid poll, because it doesn't make a difference between duel and ctf/tdm casters. It's obviously that the duel casters get more votes.
It is a shame that zsx vanished from the scene and prolly won't cast in the future but he got everything a great caster requires. Imo he could be on the same level as 2gd as he can lead a cast, give great insight, doesn't bore you with his voice and can fill pauses with british humor :D and other interesting stuff.
Imo I think there are only a few casters who are able to cast a big duel tournament.
- joe+calipt/2gd
- zsx+x
- (nvc)
I don't know much about tdm/ctf so I can't value vor's and disrupt's cast, but they seem to do a fairly job.
I'm gay for English accent, both are humorous, entertaining, some decent insights.
calipt - not really a caster, but a great player + gives some really interesting insight on the game, that's what has been lacking in other casters for some time.
edit: nvc and dis are good for TDM.
Kinda hard to vote since, like nvc said, duel casters will have the upper hand here.
TosspoT stands tall in my book, followed by Joe + 2GD, individually they're good, but combined theyre absolutely superiour then any commentary duo's out there.
2gd is best allround
tosspot for enthusiasm/"wow" moments, which is nice for big finals
calipt for insight
fishtstix is simply a good commentator, doesnt stutter and fluently explains what's going on - the best US has to offer so far imo
the others are annoying in some way, but zsx i haven't heard enough to decide about
So there's this wanker around, going out of his way to accuse me of stealing his name while squawking over and over like a mangy parrot that he's "not the aussie shitter". Typical useless pommy cunt stealing from us aussies, first it was Kylie, but then it was the diabz and that's when it got fucken srs.
There's a post a couple of years after I'd chosen the alias "diabz" (it was "Diablos" [FFVIII], everyone in q3 just called me "diabs" or "diabz" so it stuck).
So there you go. As stupid as the typical englishmen, he names himself after a shitter convict's descendant.
Sure, but 2GD generally has all the insight you need for a caster. TheBeard is there for entertainment purposes, and besides, he could learn eventually.
man some epic times listening to him during q3 eurocup tdm and major duel competetion.
And cant forget about Trillian! she was really good too and they both made a really nice shoutcasting team. Radio ITG to the ppl! =)
Cant miss on one hell of a shoutcaster... Lun!
If u wanna hear how shoutcasting q3ctf should sound like this is the dude to copy (dunno if someone will ever be able to copy that master). Lun we wont forget you!
I really like it when any pro player commentates tho, so I also got mad love for Stermy, Calipt, ZSX.
Additionally, I think Mick05 is a very underrated caster with good knowledge of the game. nVc knows what's up and doesn't get hung up on things. Jehar is one of the best natural 'hosts' and has a great voice for commentating.
calipt is doin really well. just watched a game couple of minutes ago. just joe plus jay for #1 and #2 because they are so sweet together :D perhaps already livin together in cologne? ;D
2GD talks too much. If that guy flipped a coin to determine if he should speak in game or not it would still be 50% too much.
I like his hair though But Joe has tits. I'm gonna say joe but deep down I 'm not that fussy , I care more about stream working well.
Redeye was also good. that Warwitch guy from the PK world tour was intersting too, he had a sort of ring anoucer thing that was quite unique to esports, and closer to WWF.
Just gimmie a working stream and don't talk too much and I'm happy ok. Wheat too.
Honestly, I find day9 and artosis very exciting to listen to simply because of the way they present a situation and have natural humor like 2GD to go along with it.
Has to be 2gd and Joe. The English have a natural advantage, just based on their accent. When Stephen Hawking is mocking the American accent through his robot voice, you know something is wrong. 'Here is my American accent.' - Stephen Hawking in robot.
too bad you can't do multiple votes.
